CAT
Common Admission Test (CAT) :

About The Test :

Common Admission Test (CAT), is the common entrance exam that you have to take to get admission to the Indian Institute of Management. The CAT is now conducted on the second last Sunday of November and is generally the first management entrance examination in a long list of exams to follow. CAT entrance exam is used as a criteria to shortlist applicants for admissions to the IIMs- IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, IIM Lucknow, IIM Indore, and IIM Kozhikode. Besides the IIMs some other top management institutes like Management Development Institute, S.P. Jain Institute, Nirma Institute of Management, T.A. PAI , IMT and few more also shortlist the applicants on the basis of CAT.

CAT tests the skills of candidates in five broad areas i.e., verbal ability and reasoning, reading comprehension, quantitative skills, data interpretation, and analytical and logical reasoning. The duration of the test is of 120 minutes. The number of questions asked in Common Admission Test vary every year and a typical CAT question paper can have anywhere between 75 and 150 questions. All the questions are of multiple-choice nature with four/five alternate answer choices and the candidate has to choose the best answer for each of the questions and mark it on a special Optical Reader answer sheet. For every correct answer, one mark is awarded and for every wrong answer, 1/4th of a mark is deducted. Differential marks are allotted to the questions. A question may be of 0.5 marks, 1 mark or 2 marks.

The CAT exam is conducted once a year in November/December. CAT has been rated as the most difficult MBA entrance test in the world by the Economist Intelligence Survey over the year many other institutes also accept this CAT score for their admission processes.

Common Admission Test evaluates the candidate's presence of mind and his ability to perform under pressure. Key to success in CAT exam depends on two important parameters. Firstly, it is important to get a strike rate of over 85% and reduce the number of negatives. Secondly, be smart in choosing the questions. Attempt the easy questions first. Don't try to attempt questions about which you only have a vague idea

Test Description :

Common Admission Test – CAT is a 2 ½ hours. CAT is an aptitude test. There is no set or defined syllabus for the exam. What we can say about CAT is it is designed to assess the natural ability of a person towards their desired objective. Hence CAT is designed to test the inclination of the applicant towards managerial tasks and roles. Mainly the questions are asked from Quantitative Ability (QA) Data Interpretation (DI)Reading Comprehension (RC) Verbal Ability (VA).

Quantitative Ability
The questions are designed to stress more on reasoning skills of the candidates, rather than on their computational skills. The level of difficulty of this section is perceived to be higher because the questions are not only lengthy to read but at times require more effort in terms of understanding and solving.

Data Interpretation
As the name suggests, this section presents data to the candidate in forms such as case lets, pie diagrams, bar graphs, etc and questions are set to evaluate the candidate’s skills at analyzing the given information. Data Sufficiency questions in this section are based on basic mathematics (at times Data Sufficiency is a part of the Quantitative Ability section).

Reading Comprehension
CAT usually has 6-8 passages in the RC section, with an overall length of 4500-5500 words and about 50 questions to answer in a span of about 30 minutes. However this too can vary according to the level of difficulty of questions.

Verbal Ability
This section explores your understanding of the English Language and also tests you on Reasoning Skills. The questions in this section typically comprise sentence correction, sentence sequencing, verbal reasoning etc.

CAT Scores:
Earlier CAT scores were kept secret and were available only to the management institutes affiliated in the form of percentiles. From the year 2002 however the CAT gives the students a scorecard allowing them to understand their section-wise and overall performance.

CAT Scorecard:
The CAT scorecard does not give any absolute or actual scores. The CAT being an aptitude test grades students on the relative scale. The scores are presented in two formats Percentage score (%score) and Percentile for each section and the overall test.

Percentage (%) score
The % score represents normalized percentage of scores secured by the candidate. It is a relative method of representing the score. This is not the actual % score.

Percentile
Percentile indicates student's relative performance position among the total students who took the CAT. For example 98 percentile means that the student is among the top 2 percent of the population who took the CAT.
