Group discussion has become an integral part of the selection procedure for admission to any academic programmes. Group discussion is all about the process and the content, sailing it with success is an art. GDs conducted for admission to most of the B-schools in India.

Tips for Group Discussion :

Preparations before the GD :
  • Develop reading habits- at least two National newspapers, magazines and various business articles.
  • Discuss the articles with your friends and share your views.
  • Substantiate it with examples and statistics, wherever possible.
  • Speak before the mirror and learn to modulate your voice, as is the meaning of the sentence.
  • Interact with other members of the group before the actual GD starts so that you may become comfortable with the group.
During the GD :
  • After getting the topic, structure your thoughts about it and jot down points sequentially.
  • Be an initiator and try to facilitate the direction of the GD.
  • Address the entire group while speaking and not just a single member.
  • Maintain eye contact with everyone in the group.
  • If you disagree with another person’s point begin by saying “You may be right but if we look at it from this perspective, you’ll see that…” and mention your point.
  • Do not get into personal arguments. Be polite but firm.
  • As far as possible try to supplement your viewpoint with factual examples. Avoid personal examples.
  • Don’t contradict yourself during the G. D.
  • Be a good listener.
  • Speak clearly, speak sense and also let others speak
  • When a point has been discussed often go ahead and present a new insight.
  • Whenever asked to summarize the topic touch upon all the points that have been discussed and do not try to push a point that has not been discussed.
  • Be innovative and look at the topic from different perspectives.
  • The discussion should be goal-oriented – do not go on a tangent.
  • Do not give irrelevant points just to increase your participation.
  • Your body language says a lot about you - your gestures and mannerisms are more likely to reflect your attitude than what you say.
  • Be receptive to others' opinions and do not be abrasive or aggressive.

The traditional approach of an interview is - face -to - face interpersonal role situation in which one person asks and other answers. There is a two-way communication. It is a conversation with a purpose. Interview, in the layman's language, is a physical interface between the interviewer and the interviewee with the objective of assessing interviewee's potential by the interviewer for some specific purpose.

Tips for Interview :

Getting started :
  • Carry all the necessary documents & certificates.
  • Your updated resume should be carried along.
  • Reach the place at least 15-20 min early.
While Entering :
  • Do not forget - a smile adds to your face value.
  • Greet the interviewer/s as soon as you enter.
  • Offer a firm and a confident handshake - only if the interviewer offers to.
  • Take a seat, when asked to and do not make too much of noise while sitting. Sit straight, but in a comfortable position.
During the Interview :
  • Be prepared for the frequently asked questions like - family background, academics, hobbies and interests, and work experience.
  • The key to answer all these questions is - being honest and genuine. A positive approach and confidence should be reflected in your answers.
  • Do not hesitate to accept that you are unaware of a particular question posed. [it is better than giving the wrong answers].
  • Your answers should be specific, supported with relevant figures and examples and covering all the aspects of the questions asked.
  • Do not argue unnecessarily, but put your perspective with confidence and let it reflect clarity of thoughts.
  • Maintain a good eye contact with the interviewer/s, ensure right pauses and a proper tone of voice throughout the interview.
Tips for Formal Dressing :
Keeping in mind that the first impression is the lasting impression :
  • Formal attire is preferred for an interview.
  • The outfit has to be comfortable, well fitting and enhancing your personality.
  • Avoid wearing flashy colours, stick to formal colours.
  • Proper formal shoes, appropriate hairstyle and a composed look are essential to complement the attire that you are wearing.
  • Strong perfumes or body sprays should be avoided as far as possible.
  • Avoid wearing too many accessories.
